Big Brother

THERE was this moment yesterday.

.

.

You had finally slowed down.  It was one of those times.

{You know the kind.}

.

.

You sat with me.

We prepared mind and body for mid-day rest.

We prayed.

You wanted me to ask God for a bunny.  You hoped it would be in your bed waiting when you woke up.

{If only it worked that way.}

{Maybe it does.}

.

.

Finished with thanks and requests

{mine and yours}

I opened my eyes and saw you looking at me.

.

.

You didn’t speak.  Only a small peacefulness stretched your tiny lips.

I pushed back hair from your forehead and smoothed the skin, remembering your softness.

You didn’t move.

That’s when it hit me.

That moment.

.

.

In that instant, you looked just like her.

Like your baby sister.

I teared and you noticed and twirled my hair.

But

.

.

Did you know?

.

.

Did you know that you’re a big brother?

.

.

I wonder what you’ll feel one day.

When you understand.

Will you look in the mirror and see her eyes?

Will  you realize she had your same lips?

.

One day you will.

For a moment.
